Most "best gun safe" lists rank products without ever explaining what the ratings printed on the box actually mean. That's backwards. A safe's UL rating, its fire-rating number, its steel gauge, and its lock type determine almost everything about how it'll perform when it matters, and once you understand those four things, ranking specific models gets a lot easier because you already know what to look for. This guide walks through each one in the order we think you should actually decide them, not the order a spec sheet lists them.

How much safe you actually need

Size is the first real decision, and it's also the one most buyers get wrong in a predictable direction: too small. A safe advertised as a "24-gun" model rarely holds 24 rifles the way you'd actually want to store them, once scopes, slings, and realistic spacing between guns are accounted for. Security ratings: what UL, RSC, TL-15, and TL-30 actually certify

"UL Listed" means an independent lab, Underwriters Laboratories, tested the claim, not that the manufacturer is asserting it. That distinction matters because a safe can be built well without ever being tested by UL, and a safe can be UL Listed on its lock while carrying no burglary rating on its body at all. Those are two separate claims, often printed on the same spec sheet.

RSC, which stands for Residential Security Container, is UL's baseline rating for home-use security safes. A real RSC-rated safe is built from 10 to 14 gauge steel with a UL Listed lock. Steel gauge numbering runs backwards from what you'd expect: the larger the number, the thinner the steel, and the difference is real. 10 gauge steel measures about 0.1406 inches thick, nearly double 14 gauge's 0.0781 inches. Hollon's own Republic RSC-rated line, as one real, currently sold example, uses a 3-gauge door over a 10-gauge body and adds a 90-minute fire rating on top of the base RSC certification.

Above RSC sit the commercial-grade TL ratings, and the number after "TL" tells you roughly how long the safe held up under a real, tool-based attack. TL-15 testing puts drills to work on the door and one side wall; Hollon's own TL-15 safes "endured the attack by UL's safe crackers and passed after they could only get up to 55% of the way through after the allotted 15 minutes". TL-30 steps up both the tool list and the difficulty: sledgehammers, pickaxes, crowbars, pry bars, power saws, chisels, drills, and rotating disc cutters are all in play, a meaningfully wider attack than TL-15 faces. Very few gun safes sold for home use actually carry a TL rating, most residential products stop at RSC, so seeing "TL-15" or "TL-30" on a gun safe (rather than a commercial vault) is usually a sign you're looking at a heavier-duty, more expensive product than a typical home safe. Fire ratings: what the minutes and degrees actually mean

A fire rating describes how long the safe's interior stays below a temperature that would damage what's inside, while the fire around it burns much hotter. Hollon's TL-30-rated MJ Series states this directly: a "2 Hour internal temperature of 350°F while the external temperature reaches up to 1750°F". That gap between interior and exterior temperature is the entire point of a fire liner. 350°F is roughly the threshold where paper starts to char, so a safe holding its interior under that line for the stated duration is what actually protects documents, not the number of minutes by itself. A "30-minute" or "90-minute" rating on a gun safe (Hollon's own Republic RSC line claims 90 minutes) follows the same logic at a shorter, less expensive protection window, which is the realistic tradeoff on most home gun safes: full commercial-grade fire protection is expensive, and most house fires are discovered and fought well within an hour.

Lock types: mechanical, electronic, and biometric

The three lock types you'll actually encounter are a mechanical dial, an electronic keypad, and a biometric fingerprint reader, and none of them is a strictly "better" choice than the others. They trade off differently on speed, power dependence, and long-term reliability. A mechanical dial lock has no battery to die and no electronics to fail, but it's the slowest to open under stress and the hardest to change quickly if you need to grant someone else access. An electronic keypad is fast and lets you set your own code, at the cost of needing working batteries. Most models warn you well before they die, but it's still a real point of failure a dial lock doesn't have. A biometric lock is fastest of all for the registered owner, trading that speed for a higher price and a real dependency on the sensor working correctly in the dark or with wet hands. Interior organization: what actually protects the guns you store

The inside of a safe matters as much as the rating on the door, and it's the part most buyers plan for last. Cramming a safe to its advertised gun count usually backfires. Liberty Safe's own guidance on this is blunt: "Smart gun rack placement is about more than fitting 'one more rifle,'" and packing every slot tight enough to hit the advertised number means "you'll end up lifting firearms up and over each other, which is where most finish wear happens". Gun safe pricing spans a wide range within a single manufacturer's own lineup, not just across brands. FAQ

Is a more expensive gun safe always more secure?

Not automatically. Price often reflects capacity, finish, and brand markup as much as it reflects the actual security rating. A $300 pistol box and a $4,000 modular safe aren't competing for the same job. Check the real UL rating (RSC vs. TL-15/TL-30) and steel gauge printed on the spec sheet rather than assuming price alone tells you the security level.

Do I need a fire rating, or is burglary resistance enough?

It depends on what you're storing. If the safe holds firearms alone, burglary resistance matters most. If it also holds documents, photos, or anything else that a 350°F interior would destroy, a real fire rating (even a modest 30- or 90-minute one) is worth paying for, since most house fires are discovered and addressed well inside that window.

What's the real difference between RSC and TL-15?

RSC is the standard home-safe rating: 10-14 gauge steel with a UL Listed lock. TL-15 is a commercial-grade rating tested with real drilling attacks on the door and a side wall over a 15-minute window, and it's rare to see on a gun safe built for home use specifically rather than a business or commercial vault.

Should I buy the biggest safe I can afford, or size to what I own now?

Is a mechanical dial lock outdated compared to electronic or biometric?
